Lady Vikings Volleyball Tournament Champions

The Sunnyslope Vikings volleyball team competed in the Millennium Tigers Volleyball Tournament last Saturday coming home with the championship after defeating a fine Parker High team 2 games to 1. 27-29, 25-23, 15-10

The Lady Vikings scrapped all tournament long to win games. Opposing teams were aiming for them and played their ‘A’ game every match. At the end of the day the Vikings and didn’t lose a match on there way to the tournament championship. They finished “A” pool play with a 4 – 0 record to gain the number 1 seed going unto bracket play. Having to play the number two seed, Northwest Valley Christian, the Vikings had to go to 3 games in the best two out of three format. Sunnyslope won 26 – 24, 24 – 26, 15 -13.
In the championship match against Parker, who defeated Tucson Buena High in the semis, the Vikings fell behind early, but the steady play co-captains Katie Meyers and Emma Ridley helped bring Sunnyslope back to tie the score. Parker eventually prevailed in overtime but this led to the Vikings digging deep to come from behind again to win the second game. In the third game of the championship match Sunnyslope decided enough is enough. Strong defense by Sarah Johnson, Laurann Durbin and Cassandra Burruel, plus the hitting of all-tournament selection Ridley led to the Vikings taking an early lead. Meyers’ serving then put Parker away.
This is the third tournament win this year, tying the 2005 squad for most regular season tourney wins.
